Mayday Accident & Emergency

Accident and Emergency

What we do

We provide immediate treatment to more than 120,000 patients per year who need urgent care at either our main Accident and Emergency department or the Emergency Minor Treatment Centre.

When you arrive at Mayday’s A&E department you will be seen first by a senior, experienced A&E nurse. This nurse will assess your condition and may re-direct you to where you can get more appropriate treatment, such as Croydon’s Walk-in Centre, your own GP, the out of hours doctor or dentist services (Croydoc and Croydent - which are on the Mayday site) or a pharmacy.

This service means that people are less likely to be waiting for treatment when they could get faster, better help elsewhere.

The “Meet and Greet” system also helps identify very sick people who can then be given immediate treatment by the A&E team.

There is a dedicated children’s area providing a 24 hour service.

Emergency Minor Treatment Centre

This is a nurse-led walk-in clinic where adults and children over one year old can be assessed and treated for a variety of minor injuries including:

  • Cuts, grazes and wounds
  • Minor burns and scalds
  • Sprains and strains
  • Minor head injuries
  • Minor eye injuries
  • Removing some foreign bodies

We cannot treat children under 1 year old or certain conditions including:

  • General illness
  • Chest or abdominal pain or injuries
  • Diarrhoea and vomiting
  • Headaches
  • Rashes
  • Back or neck pain
  • People who have been assaulted
  • Road traffic accidents

For these and other serious conditions seek advice from your own GP, NHS Direct on 0845 4647 or go to the main A&E department at Mayday Hospital. Please note we cannot provide transport from the Emergency Minor Treatment Centre to A&E.
