The Dermatology Service at Mayday University Hospital
The dermatology service at Mayday University Hospital is provided by a team of 3 Consultant dermatologists, clinical assistants, specialist nurses and clerical staff. The clinical space is dedicated specifically to dermatology and facilities include consulting rooms, two operating suites, a phototherapy and day care suite and a skin patch testing room. In 2002 the department was successful in bidding for money from the Action on Dermatology Project and was awarded £680,000. This money formed the basis for the new designated Croydon Dermatology Centre at Mayday University Hospital which was opened by Mr Peter Lapsley, Chief Executive of the Skin Care Campaign, in December 2005.
A full range of dermatology services is provided at Mayday University Hospital including the diagnosis and treatment of patients with skin cancers, inflammatory skin diseases and children with skin diseases. There is also a specialised phototherapy suite for ultraviolet light treatment (PUVA and UVB). Other services provided include skin patch testing, nurse-led treatment clinics, iontophoresis and cosmetic camouflage. The dermatology department has close links with St John’s Institute of Dermatology at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals (e.g. for tertiary referrals).
