NHS constitution logoThe NHS Constitution brings together in one place what staff, patients and the public can expect from the NHS.

As well as capturing the purpose, principles and values of the NHS, the Constitution brings together a number of rights, pledges and responsibilities for staff and patients alike.

Update November 2009

The Department of Health has launched a consultation on proposed new patient rights for inclusion in the NHS constitution.

These are:

  • Treatment within a maximum of 18 weeks from GP referral and to be sen by a cancer specialist within 2 weeks of GP referral
  • NHS health checks for people aged 40 to 74 to assesse their risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and kidney disease
