Giving a voice to our patients
Mayday has launched a new group to help the Trust learn from the experience of our patients and carers.
The group will meet regularly and there will be a chance for the members to consider a wide spectrum of topics and ensure that patient views are reflected in the Trust's business and clinical strategy.
The newly elected chair of the Patient Assembly Mike McConnell writes…
“I am excited and privileged to have been appointed to lead a very interesting and experienced team of volunteers, whose sole motivation is to improve the quality of health care.
The concept of an organisation which gives patients a real voice has been shown to be successful in other Trusts nearby and the group is looking forward to being able to channel patient feedback into the Trust Board and senior management teams and work towards improving services.
It should be appreciated that there are already existing channels, Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS), in the hospital for individual patient support, advice and feedback on quality of service and the Assembly will not replace that aspect. What our members will be able to do is identify trends and select key issues which can be looked at in greater detail.
We are in the process of establishing our action plan for 2010 and key questions already identified are:
- Are staff training programmes meeting patient requirements?
- Is information given to patients fully accessible and in the correct format?
- Can we establish close links with the Equality & Diversity sub groups?
- How do we ensure that the views of “hard to reach” groups are represented?
Each Assembly member will represent a hospital or community support group to help ensure that issues are raised across the whole of a patient’s journey, not just the hospital service, and improving patient satisfaction will be central to our action plan.
